Bali’s Kites

If you are going to Bali between June and September, you will notice that the clear blue sky above you is strewn with hundreds of kites, and you may hear the humming sound of the kite strings vibrating in the wind. During this dry season, the warm trade winds blow continually from east to west, and many Balinese children and adults enjoy flying kites in the rice fields around Villa M, you holiday villa in Bali.

From the poolside and garden of your Bali private luxury villa, you will see Balinese kites of all shapes and sizes, some are fashioned after birds, others after dragons, fish, monsters, vampires, aircraft, and many more in big or small size, and some of them are extremely huge. The traditional giant kites measure up to 10 meters in length and four meters in width. The larger the kite, the more wind it can hold and the higher it will fly.

The four-day Bali kite festival is held every year in July when the winds are at their strongest. It takes place at Padanggalak, Sanur, and is actually a seasonal religious festival intended to send a message to the gods for abundant crops and harvests. A total of around 1500 giant kites are made and flown competitively by teams from different villages. This is just one of the many cultural festivals you can enjoy while staying in Bali
